The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is a rewarding introduction to the world of camp counseling for teens, ages 16-17. This program combines formal leadership training, service learning opportunities, and daily practical experience working with small groups of children.
CITs acquire skills to become responsible, thoughtful, and creative leaders. These positions requires a mandatory training session and a three-week minimum commitment.
During the three-week session, CITs follow a progressive schedule that allows them to develop their skills:
CITs become acquainted with all aspects of working with campers. They observe counselors at work, reflect on those observations in round table discussions, learn from members of our camp leadership team, and become familiar with the YMCA and its mission. Between training sessions, participants engage in recreational activities and structured team building activities.
CITs begin to work with campers under the guidance of experienced counselors. During the course of the week, CITs gradually transition into a leadership role.
CITs will be paired with a counselor to live in a cabin with six children. CITs learn conflict resolution skills, problem solving, confidence-building, and much more.
Applicants wishing to be a Counselor-in-Training must complete the CIT application and personal interview and provide one reference from an unrelated adult. Prospective CITs can register at any point in the application process, but their registration will not be formally approved until they have successfully completed the application process.
